The cryptocurrency industry is expected to undergo major trends in 2025, according to Real Vision’s crypto analyst Jamie Coutts. Coutts predicts that the DeFi sector could see a significant increase of between 4x and 5x as traditional finance (TradFi) enters the space, leading to the outperformance of certain DeFi protocols over popular cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin, Ethereum, and Solana. Additionally, Coutts foresees an entanglement between DeFi and TradFi in the coming year.

In outlining the big trends for 2025, Coutts predicts that TradFi will begin catching up, with centralized exchanges (CEXs) making acquisitions and integrating more with cryptocurrencies like Robinhood and Arbitrum. He also anticipates that several CEXs will file and list on traditional finance exchanges, while others will develop their own decentralized exchange (DEX) platforms or multichain integrations. Furthermore, the tokenization of real-world assets (RWAs), particularly stocks and fixed income assets, is expected to boost sector valuations. Growth investors in TradFi are projected to start adding crypto sleeves, with a focus on the DeFi sector due to the potential to model cashflows. Overall, Coutts predicts a 4-5x increase in the DeFi sector, with several protocols outperforming ETH, SOL, and BTC.

Coutts highlights the rapid growth of the cryptocurrency market in comparison to the more established TradFi industry. He points out that crypto is gaining traction, with Coinbase accounting for 11% of global exchange revenue and ranking ahead of Nasdaq. In addition, decentralized exchanges (DEXs) hold 5% of market share, surpassing exchanges like HKEX and CBOE. The total revenue of CEXs is projected to reach parity with TradFi by 2024, with CEXs and DEXs growing at a rate 2.5-4x faster than TradFi. Coutts also notes that DEXs are among the most profitable applications globally and that if the CEX sector were valued based on Coinbase’s price-to-sales multiple, the total market cap would be $749 billion compared to TradFi’s $610 billion. As of the current writing, the total DeFi market cap is $152.616 billion.

As the cryptocurrency industry continues to evolve, it is clear that significant shifts and developments are on the horizon. With the expected growth of the DeFi sector and the increasing crossover between DeFi and TradFi, investors and stakeholders are presented with new opportunities and challenges. The integration of decentralized finance into the mainstream financial ecosystem, along with the tokenization of real-world assets, is set to transform the landscape of finance. As traditional finance institutions embrace cryptocurrency and blockchain technology, the lines between the two sectors are becoming increasingly blurred, setting the stage for a dynamic and competitive market environment in 2025 and beyond. By staying informed and adapting to these trends, individuals and businesses can position themselves for success in the rapidly evolving cryptocurrency industry.
